Selling Electrical Equipment 101: A Guide for Sellers

Whether you are an electrician with a lot of electrical equipment on hand or you work for a construction crew and you've harvested electrical equipment during demolition, the items you have in your possession very well could land you a nice paycheck. There are companies that buy electrical equipment outright because most of this type of equipment can either be reused or refurbished to new condition and resold. If you are new to selling used electrical equipment, you are bound to have a few questions. Here are a few of the most common questions and the answers you should know.

What type of electrical equipment can be sold?

While a lot of people looking to sell electrical equipment assume that most items can be sold, there are usually certain types of items electrical equipment buyers are looking for. Most places won't be interested in things like lighting, conduit, or meter sockets, for example. Some of the more common items the average buyer will be looking to buy include things like the following:

  • Larger horsepower electric motors
  • Electric transformers and transformer parts or connectors
  • Panelboards and switchboards
  • Circuit breakers
  • Transfer switches of different types

Most companies that buy these electrical pieces will have a detailed list of what they will buy on their website, but if you don't see a list, give the company a call and they will let you know what they are interested in buying.

Does electrical equipment have to be functional to be sold?

Some companies who buy electrical equipment will have clear outlines stating that all items must be functional. However, some items are still valuable even if they are not functional because the items can be restored. For example, electrical transformers can oftentimes be refurbished with new parts or their parts can be harvested for reuse in other items. Therefore, most companies will actually have some electrical items they will buy whether they are functional or not.

Should you clean up the items before sending them or showing them to a buyer?

It is always a good idea to make sure the items you plan to sell are in a clean enough condition that the buyer can see what they need to about the item. Therefore, before you take items to a buyer or if you have to send pictures to an online buyer, it is a good idea to remove any debris present that can make the item hard to examine.
